Never Overthink Flower Arranging

Floral Arrangements

The thing about flower arranging is that there is no right way or wrong way in essence, you should go with your instincts as much as possible and don`t overthink the issue. So whatever types of flowers and colours you want in your flower arrangement go for it.

Within a flower arrangement it is a great idea to vary the heights and sizes of the flowers within it. The variations give the arrangement more depth and interest. Play around with your flowers, don`t have them in perfect symmetry as there is more to catch the eye when they are not.

A good rule of thumb though is to add the large, heavier flowers first and then turn the floral display as you work to ensure even placement on all sides of the arrangement. Fill in with smaller, airier blooms, and leave enough space between the stems so individual flowers have room to shine through.

Another good rule of thumb is to make the top of the arrangement about one and a half times higher than the container it is placed in. This tends to give you about the right geometric shape. Try to mix in different textures and varied sizes of flower heads, shapes and colours to give the whole display a really visually appealing look.

Cutting The Flower Stems

If you cut off part of the stems of the flowers (about an inch) at a slight angle the flowers will absorb water more easily when in the arrangement and so keep fresher for longer. Likewise to keep them fresh you should be changing the water in the arrangements on a regular basis, daily if possible, and another good tip is to cut off any leaves that are sitting in the water as they rot easily and seep into the water. Trimming up can make all the difference to the look.

Of course if you want your flowers arranged for you we are here for you. Just call into Flowery Potters or give us a call on 028 9422 8010.
