Floristry Industry Information

Monday, December 19th 2016 10:07pm

Hello and welcome to another blog post from Flowery Potters, and this is the last post before the festive break so we would just like to wish all our customers and blog readers a Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year! We hope you have had a great 2016 and we can all look forward to an even better 2017.

In todays blog we thought we would give you some information on the florist industry as a whole which we thought may be of interest to you. Did you know that:
  • The florists industry is worth approximately £1 billion in revenue per year.
  • There are over 14,180 florists in the UK who employ 21,281 people.
  • There is now more competition for florists in the shape of supermarkets, online retailers and department stores who all provide flowers and plants. Supermarkets are a particular issue for the small, independent flower shop, as many people see them as a convenient and cheap alternative.
  • The UK spends less money on flowers and plants on average each year than most of its European cousins. A UK household will spend on average around £36 per year whereas in Europe as a whole they spend anything from between £60 to £100.
  • Many florists businesses are small with over 90% of them employing less than 10 people.
  • It is relatively easy to set up a florists as the start up costs are not prohibitive, however it is not so easy to have long term success with many start ups not lasting the pace.

As you can see by the above information and figures running an independent florist in the UK can be a tough job, but it is one that is a very fulfilling and enjoyable one, and we would not swap it for the world. But we appreciate all our customers, old and new, and always endeavour to give them the best possible service and the finest, freshest quality plants and flowers available. Thanks for reading our blog and we will be back next year, have a great festive break and we hope to see you in our florists very soon!
